03 The Dealer’s Hand
Two shows about the people who decide what gets seen — and one cluster of closings that makes you feel the weight of that decision.
The Chelsea closing-urgency cluster poses an institutional question most gallery visitors don’t think to ask: who is the show actually about? The Paula Cooper Effect is nominally about the prints Gemini G.E.L. made for Cooper’s artists — Judd, di Suvero, Brown, Calle — but it’s really about Paula Cooper herself: how one person’s taste, relationships, and institutional courage shaped four decades of New York art. ’The Effect’ in the title is doing real work. And George Henoch Shechtman’s 60-year retrospective at Gallery Henoch is a parallel biography from a different vantage point — the mid-tier dealer who built a community of figurative painters outside the market’s spotlight. The David Zwirner Bernstein collection show completes the triangle: what does private collecting do to the art that passes through it? These aren’t just shows — they’re arguments about who the infrastructure of the art world serves, and what gets lost when it changes. Four shows closing tomorrow add a specific urgency: some things only exist when someone decided they would.
